The RSPB Ribble Discovery Centre is just a few minutes’ walk from the mud, saltmarsh and sand dunes of the mighty Ribble, it is the perfect base to discover the seaside and the fascinating wildlife which makes its home here.
Located on the edge of Fairhaven Lake, there’s plenty to see – from the ducks enjoying the lake to the impressive views across the Ribble Estuary. As the most important single river estuary in the UK, the Ribble is a fantastic home for nature, with more than a quarter of a million birds visiting every year.
The centre, which is run in partnership with Fylde Borough Council, is open all year round and has a full programme of events suitable for all ages. Fairhaven Lake also offers peaceful seaside activities and has pram and wheelchair-friendly walks, toilet and cafe facilities.
Visitors can also browse the shop, which sells a full range of RSPB bird care products, gifts, books and binoculars.
The centre also offers a high quality educational experience in the Ribble Estuary and was awarded ‘Outstanding’ in the Learning Outside the Classroom Scheme.
The Ribble Estuary is one of the top estuaries in the UK for birds. Up to 300,000 birds use the estuary as either a winter home or a refuelling stop during their migrations from the Arctic to Africa. There is always plenty to see, especially in autumn and spring.
In summer we’re open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. During the summer term the centre may occasionally be closed for part of the day due to school visits, but the shop will always be open at these times. If in doubt, please call us first to check the centre is open. During winter, come and see us anytime from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm.
Families are at the heart of the Ribble Discovery Centre and there are activities and interactive displays on offer for all ages to discover more about giving nature a home.
Visitors can enjoy a full programme of family events all year-round, while the popular badge-making and colouring activities are available every day.
If you have ever wondered ‘what’s that bird’ and would like to know more about the birds in the Ribble area, why not join one of our monthly guided walks. Held from September to June, the walks are perfect for beginners and getting closer to our feathered friends on the lake and the estuary.
We also offer a range of fun, educational activities for school and youth groups, so go on, book your trip today.
